Excerpt: Bride by Arrangement

Ruth and my anthology, Bride by Arrangement, is in e-book and is released in paperback Feb. 1. The anthology includes two  novellas where two women meet on a train, traveling from Virginia to Lincoln, Neb., in 1876. The characters keep in contact but live separate lives.

My novella is She Came by Train, and Ruth’s story is The Purchased Bride. Hers is a mail-order bride story. After crying the whole trip, Ada steps off the train to meet her husband, Pete Kelly. Who is this quiet man and what is her future? Here is an excerpt:

“He took her by the arm and led her back to the horse.  She accepted his offer to help her back on the saddle, this time maneuvering so she could balance on it.  It took her a moment to realize his hand lingered on her leg which was, once again, exposed except for the bloomers she was wearing because her skirt was up to her knees.
“She followed the direction of his gaze as he examined the length of her leg, and her breath caught in her throat as his hand went from her ankle to her knee.  She remained still, wondering if he’d slip his hand under her skirt, but he didn’t.  Instead, he removed his hand from her leg and got back on the horse.  She released her breath, unsure of whether she was relieved or disappointed.”
