The book includes two separate novellas where two women meet on a train, traveling from Virginia to Lincoln, Neb., in 1876. Best-selling author Ruth Ann Nordin wrote The Purchased Bride. My novella is She Came by Train where Opal Preston takes a governess position to two children of a Lincoln businessman whose wife has passed away. She is accustomed to the finery of the plantation country. As she looks at the desolate Nebraska land before her, she wonders if she can adapt to the primitive surroundings. Mr. Boyer falls in love with her, but soon a preacher from Virginia arrives to vie for her affections. She Came by Train by only her heart will determine if she will return that way. Here is an excerpt from the end of chapter 1:

“’That’s the house,’ he [Mr. Boyer] said, his voice jovial. ‘You’re going to like my kids. But it’ll take them awhile to get used to your Southern accent and your city duds.’

‘Charles City is in plantation country.’ She paused. ‘Duds? I’m not sure I’m acquainted with that word.’

He chuckled. ‘Clothing, miss.’

‘Oh.’ She gazed at the long-rustic structure before them. Yes, it looks like a nice home, but where’s the picket fence and rock way in front? Her mouth opened wide. My God. She could not believe her eyes at the honking geese strutting in front of the wooden-planked home.”

  1. I love the honking geese. 😀 They were so funny.

  2. Thanks Ruth. It is a good thing they were honking and strutting not waddling and quacking. Ha! Ha! Lots of love.
